A. Physical Environment

1. Chile Relief Map

This map is useful because it shows the altitude in comparison to the surrounding areas. Since the Andes are also in Argentina, it shows more perspective of the Andean footprint.

2. Chile Shaded/colored Topographic Map

Shaded relief maps show features on the surface, such as hills and valleys. Because this is a map of only Chile, it can go into more detail of the terrain of Chile.

3. Chile Vegetation  Map

This map shows the variety of vegetation throughout Chile. It is useful because it illustrates how diverse this country is. Since Chile crosses so many latitude lines, this map shows how the vegetation changes as well.

B. Weather and Climate

1. Köppen Climate Map

The Köppen climate classification system is a common system that divides climates into groups based on seasonal precipitation patterns. This gives a good overview of Chile’s climate. The bright green yellow color of the arid desert stands out immediately contrasting aside the bright orange color of cool Mediterranean climate.

2. Rainfall, Temperature, and Runoff Maps

A side-by-side collage is helpful because they show three aspects of the climate of Chile right next to each other in order to compare. It can easily be deduced how rainfall, temperature, and runoff affect each other. Each one of these categories are highly variable, depending on the latitude of the region.

3. Annual Mean Temperature

Annual mean temperature is helpful to get a broad understanding of what to expect when visiting Chile. Since the map depicts annual mean temperature, it would only be useful in the early planning stages of trip, when the dates of travel have not been decided upon. I would recommend a more detailed map.

C. Human Environment

1. Economic  Activity

Simple maps can be helpful at times. This map helps locate industry, power generation, oil and gas, and raw material locations. This map is easy to read because it is  lacks clutter. A helpful component of this map is the mining areas. A tourist may want to avoid the mining areas.

2. Population Density of Chile

A population density map measures the number of persons per square kilometer of land area. This map is effective in highlighting the more densely populated parts of the country. The darker green areas show the more urban areas. The majority of the population resides in central Chile.

3. Indigenous People of Chile Map

Travelers gain a great deal of knowledge by interacting with the wide variety of natives that inhabit Chile. Cultural geographic maps like the one above show by color where the different native tribes reside.

D. Road Maps

1. Chile Road Map 1

Road maps are helpful in navigating a country and planning a trip. This road map has good resolution and is easy to read. It also lists a good number of cities and towns. It would not be helpful for real-world travel from place to place because it lacks detail and location of less major roads.

2. Chile Road Map 2

This road map good resolution and is more detailed. This map would be a better choice when planning a trip because it shows more towns and more of the minor roads.

3. Chilean Heartland Map

Most of the population of Chile inhabits the Chilean Heartland. Since the rest of the country is less-traveled, the mapmakers can make the details of this section larger than a map of the whole country.

E. City Maps

1. City Map of Santiago

Prepared and published by the United States Defense Mapping Agency, this map shows great detail and has many features. It includes topographic interval lines, which can be beneficial when traveling by foot or bike. It also shows nearly every street name, which would be useful in finding a particular attraction.

2. City Map of Temuco

Some detail is lacking, but it may be just enough to navigate to points in and around the city center of Temuco. The main streets are clearly labeled.

3. City Map of Valparaiso

The same company that produced the map of Temuco produced this city map of Valparaiso. The black and white map is clear and easy to read. With less clutter than some maps, a tourist may find this map more user friendly than a map with more components and distracting colors.

F. Urban Transportation

1. Santiago Subway Map

The subway system of Santiago is represented on this schematic map. The routes are not drawn to scale, the dots depicting stops are equidistant, and the lines do not show many curves. This map is easy to read and follow when navigating to another station of destination.

2. Transit Map of Greater Santiago

This map shows all the transportation options in the greater Santiago area. It is very detailed and has a high resolution. This map would be all a tourist needs to navigate to a particular location in the city. It shows main routes as well as local routes to navigate side streets.

3. Valparaiso Transit Map

The transit system also utilizes a schematic map. It is not very detailed, but it gives a good idea of where a traveler can go when riding the various transit lines. It is easy to read, and the colors do a good job of distinguishing the different legs.

G. Tourist Sites

1. Valparaiso Tour Map

This map lists by number popular tourist attractions, such as museums, restaurants, lodging, and shopping. This map was made by the Valparaiso tourism department

2. Santiago Tour Map of University Area

Here is a map that shows over sixty options for a tourist to pursue in and around the university area. The numbered destinations are differentiated by color. The dark brown numbers indicate monuments or buildings of interest, and the red numbers indicate university facilities and attractions.

3. Chilean Wine Map

Wine production is an important part of the Chilean economy. A tourist who is a wine enthusiast may want to integrate drinking wine and visiting vineyards as part of their tour. This map distinguishes the different regions of wine production. A tourist who has an interest in a particular wine region could consult this map to get an idea of the location in the country in which it is located.
