Least Expensive Airfare to Four Continents
Least expensive air travel from Omaha to four continents - Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.
1. Ground rules
3. Influence of travel dates
4. Least expensive round-trip to Europe
5. Least expensive round-trip to Asia
6. Least expensive round-trip to South America
7. Least expensive round-trip to Africa
8. Sum total of all three airfares
This is somewhat of a competition. I give extra points for the person with the least total airfare to all of these continents. All airfares must be roundtrip from Omaha, and must for be a three-week period from now until Sept. 1. It can be two different airlines, in which case you would present two different graphic files. The timing must be such that you can make the connection. Provide at least 3 hours. If the connection has you spending the night at the airport, you must include the cost of a hotel.
Generally, the least expensive fares to these destinations are from coastal cities in the US, like LA and New York. In order to get the lowest fare, you need to find the least expensive coastal city and the least expensive flight from Omaha to that city. Sites like Kayak and Expedia won't do this automatically. There may be some ground transportation involved in transferring to a nearby airport. Include the ground transportation cost and associated graphics. Bigger cities have multiple airports so don't get confused. New York, for example, has five airports: JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, White Plains, and Newburgh. Only three offer international flights. The cheapest flights are often from the smaller airports that charge a lesser fee for landing.
You don't need to check luggage but you do need to include a carry-on bag.
Prices vary widely during this period. They also vary by day of the week. You must present screenshots of the airfare with sufficient detail to verify the dates, connections, and price - including taxes. Use only commercial airlines - you can't use military aircraft or family connections with commercial companies. The flight leaves from Omaha – you can't drive to another city.
I used Expedia, Kayak, and Google to search for the lowest airfare. I also tried out many websites from the individual airlines.
Influence of travel dates and cities
For each of the continents, I tried as many 21-day combinations as I could from present -day to September 1. I generally found that the lower airfares were sooner, rather than later. Some of the most expensive fares were closer to September. I had better luck in February and March.
Departure and arrival dates were important in finding the best value for fares. I found that Tuesday and Wednesday departure dates correlated to the lowest fares. This method was consistent throughout my research in all four continents.
I discovered that larger, coastal cities had the best airfare in most cases. Physical flight distance related to price as well. I found the shorter-mileage flights to be the best values.
Least expensive round-trip from Omaha to Europe
I planned a trip from Omaha to Madrid from February 26 to March 19, 2019.
The round-trip total was $469.73.
Least expensive round-trip from Omaha to Asia
I used two separate itineraries for this trip. The
first is Omaha to Seattle. The round trip total
was $294.00. From Seattle I arranged to fly to
Beijing for a $372.65. I found that it was quite
expensive to fly to Asia directly from Omaha.
The total for the trip was $666.65.
Least expensive round-trip from Omaha to South America
For South America, I planned a trip to Cali, Colombia. The trip was
planned in two parts: Omaha to Fort Lauderdale and Fort Lauderdale
to Cali. The first leg of the trip cost $270.00 round trip. The final leg
cost $191.01, for a grand total of $461.01.
Least expensive round-trip from Omaha to Africa
The African trip consisted of two legs: Omaha to Madrid, and Madrid
to Tenerife, Spain. Tenerife is politically part of Spain, but
geographically part of Africa. The cost to travel from Omaha to Madrid
was $470.73, while it was only $87.00 to fly from Madrid to Tenerife.
The total cost of the trip was $557.73.
Sum total of all four airfares
South America: $461.01
Total price: $2155.12
